Gynecomastia

Approximately 40 percent of older men experience gynecomastia, i.e. excessive breast development of men. Temporary natural enlargement of breasts may also occur in new-borns and boys in puberty, but in this case the breasts disappear themselves after some time. Gynecomastia may also disappear itself in older men if the reasons for its occurrence are found, but surgical intervention is often the only way to treat pathological gynecomastia.
Gynecomastia cannot be prevented and its main cause is the imbalance of female and male sex hormones. Various medicines or diseases, drugs and anabolic steroids may also cause gynecomastia.
Gynecomastia can be a serious problem for men, as many sufferers are too embarrassed to bare their upper body, go to the sauna or swimming, wear tight-fitting clothes or have a healthy sex life.

If you have decided to have gynecomastia surgery, please book a consultation with our specialist where we will discuss your expectations and how they can be met with surgery.
During the consultation, which lasts about an hour, the doctor will give you a detailed description of what happens before and after the surgery as well as the surgery itself. We will make the necessary tests, ask you about your health and habits, and answer all of your questions. It is important for us to know about your allergies, smoking and other health-related habits.

Gynecomastia surgery

Excess fatty tissue and sometimes saggy skin as well are removed in the course of gynecomastia surgery. The surgery lasts from one to two hours and it is always performed under general anaesthesia.
The incision sites will be marked on your breasts before the surgery. The number of incisions that need to be made depends on the patient’s requests and the extent to which breasts must be reduced.
There are several methods of gynecomastia surgery and the surgeon chooses the best method on the basis of whether the breast contains more fatty tissue or glandular tissue. Liposuction is used to remove fatty tissue, glandular tissue is cut out. Excess skin is also removed, as it would otherwise remain hanging on the body.
You will come to after the surgery in a couple of hours and spend the night in our clinic.
Some pain in the breasts is normal after surgery and you will be given painkillers if necessary. Although people have a different tolerance for pain, our patients usually don’t need painkillers for more than two days.
The surgeon will examine you the next day and give you a personal aftercare programme before discharging you from the clinic.

Wound care

The areas where the incisions were made may be tender after the surgery, but this sensitivity should decrease in a couple of weeks. The wounds should be kept as dry as possible and covered with sterile bandages for a week. It’s advisable to wear special supporting underwear for two weeks.
We don’t advise you to stretch the scars, lift heavy items, exercise vigorously or go to the sauna for a couple of months after the surgery. You should also abstain from sexual activity in the first weeks. Although vigorous exercise is not advisable, moderate physical exercise helps improve circulation and speed up recovery.
Smoking causes wounds to heal considerably slower, which is why we advise you to quit smoking for at least a month before and after the surgery.

Scars

Unfortunately, it is impossible to make incisions without leaving scars, but the scars that look dark at first will fade and become less noticeable in time. We advise using the wound gels available in pharmacies to accelerate healing. Use silicone bandages, which are also sold in pharmacies, to avoid keloid.
We advise you to protect your upper body from direct sunlight for a couple of months after the surgery, because the influence of sun radiation on the skin pigment may turn the scar darker and more noticeable.

Final result

The initial swelling will have gone down and the results of surgery will have become visible a couple of days after the surgery. Your breasts will be smaller and flatter and more proportionate to your body.
However, achieving the final result will take up to six months. The results of gynecomastia surgery are permanent if you keep your breasts in good shape with a good lifestyle and sufficient exercise.
