During the consultation, which lasts about an hour, the doctor will give you a detailed description of what happens before and after the surgery as well as the surgery itself. We will take the necessary tests, ask you about your health and habits, and answer all of your questions. It is important for us to know about your allergies, smoking and other health-related habits.
Breast reduction surgery
Breast reduction is fine plastic surgery, as the surgeon removes sagged skin, excess fatty tissue and transplants the areole with the nipple, and then moulds new and beautiful breasts for you. The surgery lasts from three to four hours and it is always performed under general anaesthesia.
The places of the incisions and the new position of your nipples are marked on your body before the surgery to give you a better idea of the final result. Liposuction is also often performed during breast reduction to make sure the result is even more permanent and natural. The distance between the breasts can also be corrected during surgery.
Breast reduction surgery means that excess skin, glandular and fatty tissue will be removed from your breasts, the nipples are placed higher up on your breasts and reduced in size if necessary.
You will come to after the surgery in a couple of hours and spend the night in our clinic. Some pain in the breasts is normal, as you’ve just had surgery. You will be given painkillers if necessary. Although people have a different tolerance for pain, our patients usually don’t need painkillers for more than two days. We will insert surgical drains to remove excess body fluid if necessary. They will be removed later.
The surgeon will examine you the next day and give your personal aftercare programme before discharging you from the clinic.
Wound care
Your breasts will be tender and sensitive to pressure after the surgery, but the swelling and sensitivity should decrease a couple of weeks after the surgery. The wounds should be kept as dry as possible and covered with sterile bandages for a week. We definitely advise you to wear a special well-fitting bra that is not underwired for 3 to 6 weeks after the surgery.
We don’t advise you to stretch the scars, lift heavy items, exercise vigorously or go to the sauna for two months after the surgery, and you should also stay away from direct sunlight. However, moderate physical exercise helps improve circulation and thereby speeds up recovery.
Smoking causes wounds to heal considerably slower, which is why we advise you to quit smoking for at least a month before and after the surgery.
Scars
Unfortunately, it is impossible to make incisions without leaving scars, but the scars that look dark at first will fade and become less noticeable in time. We advise you to use the wound gels available in pharmacies to help scars heal faster and be less visible. Use silicone bandages, which are also sold in pharmacies, to avoid keloid.
We advise you to protect yourself from direct sunlight for a couple of months after the surgery, because the influence of sun radiation on the skin pigment may turn the scar darker and more noticeable.
Final result
The swelling will have gone down a couple of days after the surgery and you will see the initial results of the operation – your breasts are smaller and more in proportion to your body. However, achieving the final result will take from six to twelve months. The swelling should go down in a couple of weeks and you will be able to return to your ordinary life, but you will be able to wear clothes you couldn’t wear before because of your big breasts.
The results of breast reduction surgery are relatively permanent and your breasts will stay beautiful for many years if you look after them properly.
