Abdominoplasty
The way we look has a strong impact on our self-esteem. A saggy belly can deteriorate your quality of life, as activities like going to the beach and baring your abdomen in front of other people may cause you embarrassment and discomfort.
Abdominal skin usually starts sagging after pregnancies or significant weight loss. As the results of abdominoplasty are relatively permanent, it’s a good method for improving your appearance. However, abdominoplasty is not a substitute for exercise and healthy eating, but helps where exercise doesn’t give the expected results.
We advise you to postpone abdominoplasty if you’re planning to lose a lot of weight, as it may have an impact on the results of the surgery. Abdominoplasty is not an obstacle if you’re planning to get pregnant.
Is abdominoplasty what I need?
- Yes, I have excess fatty tissue on my stomach that I cannot shift with exercise.
- Yes, my skin has become less elastic as a result of the hormonal changes caused by aging.
- Yes, I want my stomach to be smoother and firmer as well as visually better looking.
If you have decided to have abdominoplasty, please book a consultation with our specialist where we will discuss your expectations as well as whether and how they can be met with surgery. Together with you, we will decide whether abdominoplasty is the best solution to your problem. If necessary, we will correct the problem with liposuction to get the best and most permanent result. It is also possible to perform a partial abdominoplasty with a smaller number of incisions.
During the consultation, which lasts about an hour, the doctor will give you a detailed description of what happens before and after the surgery as well as the surgery itself. We will make the necessary tests, ask you about your health and habits, and answer all of your questions. It is important for us to know about your allergies, smoking and other health-related habits.
Abdominoplasty operation
It is possible to perform a full or partial (mini) abdominoplasty, depending on the condition of your abdomen and how much skin and fatty tissue should be removed. This is why the duration of the operation varies from two to four hours. We always perform abdominoplasty under general anaesthesia.
The places where incisions will be made are marked on your body on the day of the operation. Excess skin and subcutaneous fatty tissue will be removed from your abdomen and your abdominal muscles will be strengthened during the surgery. As skin is removed from your lower abdomen, your belly button will be repositioned to make sure it is in the right place on your body after surgery. The incision in the lower abdominal area is made as low as possible so you can cover it up with underwear. Drains are placed in the wounds after the surgery and they are removed on the first day after the surgery.
You will come to after the surgery in a couple of hours and spend up to two nights in our clinic. Some pain in the areas where the incisions were made is normal after surgery and you will be given painkillers if necessary. Although people have a different tolerance for pain, our patients usually don’t need painkillers for more than two days.
The surgeon will examine you before discharging you and give you a personal aftercare programme before discharging you from the clinic.
Wound care
Ordinary movements may be a bit painful and your tummy area may be a bit tender in the first days after surgery, but the swelling will go down in about a week and you’ll feel much better.
The wound should be kept as dry as possible and covered with sterile bandages for a week. We advise the patient to wear a special corset 24 hours a day for three to six weeks, which helps improve the final result and speeds up recovery.
We don’t advise you to stretch the scars, lift heavy items, exercise vigorously or go to the sauna for a couple of months after the surgery. We also advise you to abstain from sexual activity in the first weeks. Although vigorous exercise is not advisable, moderate physical exercise helps improve circulation and speed up recovery.
Smoking causes wounds to heal considerably slower, which is why we advise you to quit smoking for at least a month before and after the surgery.
Scars
Abdominoplasty leaves a rather big scar on the lower abdomen. The scar is more noticeable at first, but in time it fades and becomes lighter. As the location of the belly button is changed during the surgery, there will be a little circular scar around the belly button.
We advise you to use the wound gels available in pharmacies to help scars heal faster and be less visible. Use silicone bandages, which are also sold in pharmacies, to avoid keloid.
We advise you to protect yourself from direct sunlight for a couple of months after the surgery, because the influence of sun radiation on the skin pigment may turn the scar darker and more noticeable.
Final result
The swelling will have gone down a couple of days after the surgery and you will see the initial results – your tummy will be flatter and the general shape of your body is slimmer and better-looking.
However, achieving the final result takes about six months, but tenderness should decrease in a couple of weeks and you can return to your ordinary life.
The results of abdominoplasty are relatively permanent, keeping your tummy firm and flat for years. However, we still advise you to exercise regularly and eat healthily, as this guarantees that the good results will last longer.
"Had my belly operation 6 months ago. I would highly recommend Nordic Medical Center for any smaller or bigger plastic surgery that you may be considering. You could not expect for a more friendly, aware and qualified physicians."
